One of Raine's biggest hobbies has always been gaming. It all started with an Atari and spread out to Yu-Gi-Oh!, Magic: the Gathering, and Dungeons & Dragons. As an artist, Raine takes pride in painting models for games as well as making his own terrain. He's also been a writer for many years, working both in the journalism industry and writing pieces of fiction. He decided to create Initiative : Tabletop as a platform to talk about all things gaming that he simply thought were cool, and reviewing games became a part of it!

Resident Evil 2 Board Game on Kickstarter, Funded Within An Hour

Oh, is it a happy day for survival horror fans the world over! Steamforged Games has been teasing announcements of an upcoming project they’ve been working on and now that project has seen the light on Kickstarter. Of course I am talking about Resident Evil 2: the Board Game, which funded on the crowd-sourcing site in just a single hour yesterday. The project is blasting through stretch goals like magnum bullets through zombie skulls, and this little gamer couldn’t be happier.

The game itself is a fully cooperative dungeon crawler, fueled by actual scenarios taken from the video game. Players will take the role of iconic characters from the video game (I finally get to live out my dream of playing Robert Kendo from Kendo’s Gun Shop!) as they fight to survive on the streets of Raccoon City. You’ll face off against hordes of enemies, ranging from your standard Raccon City denizens-turned walkers, to Lickers and even William Birkin himself. Cooperation is key, though, as you will need each other’s support to make it through the various trials and tribulations you’ll face along the way. Enemies react to your movements and every choice you make impacts the game in some way.

The team at Steamforged really took time to build a game from the ground-up set specifically for the Resident Evil universe. Growing up, Resident Evil was my all-time favorite video game series, and to this day I’ve got every game released for it. As a die-hard fan, I can tell that the gameplay mechanics are built to make sense not only to the theme, but to the game’s core as well. Items are scarce and you’ll have to use every trick you’ve got to survive. The game utilizes a Tension deck to keep things moving, which also offers variance as you play through it over and over again because, trust me, you will.

You can pick up a copy by pledging on Kickstarter at roughly $88 for the base game and the B-Files expansion. At over $400k, the campaign is tearing down stretch goals quicker than Steamforged can make them. However, that being said, the development team is taking time to make each stretch goal count towards the game as a whole. Make sure to check out the campaign and pledge, for whether or not you’re a Resident Evil fan, this is a co-op title that I am sure will hit the table for many game groups no matter their preference!
